Heatwave

Awareness returned to Elliott suddenly in the wake of the fall. Something weighed down on his back, a pressure that rendered him barely able to breathe. It was dark, but he could hear, although most of what he heard was his own breathing. He was still alive, he figured, and as the shock slipped from his body Elliott found himself able to think clearly once again. His senses mostly blocked, he had to rely on the canvas of scents he could smell. There was a degree to which he could enhance his smell like a dog, and although such a trait was usually useless, now it would give him critical insight.

The scent of musty debris and melted steel filled his nostrils. There was sawdust and burnt rubber. He still smelled fire—and maybe that was where the heat came from that embraced him so uncomfortably. And there was so much blood. Not his own, but of others—myriad others—like a spattered canvas of death. No doubt, most if not everyone in the Committee HQ were dead—particularly the civilians. The smell of blood and death painted a picture in his mind of splendid destruction; but this was no Bob Ross piece. There was nothing happy about this occasion. Elliott growled, mustering his strength.

“Fucking shit!” He howled, the last of the debris that buried him flying off. His skin, striped with blood from the various things that cut and dug, slowly patched itself together as he took a knee and caught his breath. A small aura of spiritual pressure covered him—he tried his best to focus on repairing his injuries as thoroughly as he could. Broken bones snapped back into place, and the hole in his lung that he just now noticed sewed itself shut. Eventually, all the critical injuries were healed up. As the last of the injuries healed, the blood that covered his body slowly returned inside like a falling tide. He blinked as vision cleared and his mind finally started to once again race at its normal pace.

“Fuck.” He said, hoping to sum up the situation in one word. When that failed, he growled some more. “Fuck fuck fuck!” He stood in what could only be described as the perfect demolition. It was as though the towering Committee HQ had simply been deleted. No frame or structure of it remained. Only a mound of debris on whose summit he stood that spilled well into the streets beyond the property line. He jumped down the slope, making it to the street level with his newly restored grace, and he surveyed the situation.

“Holy shit…” he muttered. His vocabulary still wasn’t all there, but he was starting to build a picture of what happened in his mind. There were no police or emergency vehicles at the scene. Nothing was taped off. In fact, it was silent save for the cracking flames from the pyre he’d just escaped. No one was left.

A thought crossed his mind, and the question wormed its way into his head, begging for attention. He could go back into the mound and see what he could dig up. Property and items were no doubt lost, but there were people in there that could be saved, perhaps. The selfish streak of him hissed in anger at the thought and demanded that he save his own skin and leave. He’d escaped from the prison that the Committee had stuck him in so why go back? With their symbol gone, so too was their organization, and rather than rebuild with them, he’d prefer to save himself first.

He was the rookie after all. The one who hadn’t completed his training. When disaster struck in the first place he’d been told to stay inside and guard the place but look how effective that was? The fuckers who thought it prudent he stay inside to save what couldn’t be saved were probably all dead or scattered to the wind, so what chain was keeping him here now? Joining this organization was a wash, and Elliott decided then that he’d no longer be a part of it.

He still wanted to make a mark on the world. He wanted to be the one to protect humanity when the hollows invaded—in this very scenario! And yet he’d been imprisoned—not literally but constructively—in this place due to bureaucracy and a culture of mistrust. Hah, he thought. So much for that plan. Anyone in that dirtpile could sleep happy knowing it would be their coffin.

And then like a pendulum swinging, so too did the hammer of guilt hit him back. To think such thoughts about the people he’d been charged to protect. What kind of savior would he be to humanity if he would so easily forsake these people? The rational part of his mind reminded him that everyone in that dirtpile was dead but in no way happy. This was his first true assignment, and his first true failure.

The sound of sirens filled the air, reminding him that this was no place to be. He blurred away, appearing on top of an alleyway staircase before using his enhanced muscles to leap to the top of the building, bounding back and forth off the walls he scaled. He surveyed the scene from above, as was his job now. The civilian police could deal with digging up the ashes. He’d have to accept his failure from now on. He could only watch as the flames of his failure seared themselves into his mind. From this he’d make sure the lesson was learned—no longer would he tolerate being relegated to the sidelines. In the face of disaster like this, he’d carve out his own responsibility and with it do what he thought was right.

But for now, he could only think these thoughts, like the idle dreams of a boy who with his life would achieve nothing. He stood on top of the building, a solemn look etched in his face. The only true mark of his escape from death were his tattered clothes—and he could only hope that he found a way to not take that escape for granted.

Ika Mazi

Ika Mazi
You, yes you, the person reading this right now, are gay. But enough about your sexual preference towards penis, there's another dick scurrying around New York that needs attention at this time. Ika had sensed a faint Spiritual Presence in the city, another human that had apparently survived the onslaught of the Sinners thus far. Ika was trying to find him somewhere in the debris and melted steel, but dust, ashes, and smoke all marred his vision greatly. Fire burnt throughout the city in large quantities, spread loosely throughout the city and it seemed that at some point they all might come together and cause an inferno but for now, Ika couldn't worry about that. He had to find that pesky human..

Death hung heavily in the air, and the only reprieve Ika could find in this hell-hole was that the screams were finally beginning to die down, and he didn't even want to think about why they were finally ceasing. Blood spattered the ground where visibility remained, and it served as a healthy reminder of the lives that had been ended today. It was a macabre juxtaposition to the lively city that New York was under normal circumstances and all it really served to do was harden Ika's resolve, and depress him a little bit. Ika gritted his teeth, nearly giving up any hope of locating the poor cunt who had been seemingly buried in the rubble but then he heard an exclamation of freedom, an exclamation that could only be caused by successful self-preservation. Perhaps he would find him after-all..

Fucking shit was all that Ika heard as seemingly pounds of debris flew off of someone all at once, when Ika looked over all he saw was a rather gay looking boy, striped with blood from the various cuts and scratches he had endured from this event. A small aura of Reitsu seemed to cover the man, and if Ika was reading the situation right he seemed to be trying to heal himself. Ika continued moving in his direction, and as a Sinner ran past him he only had to reach out to get a good hand-full of it's throat before squeezing it as tightly as he could, crushing it's throat before continuing to advance. He heard the boy panicking, presumably attempting to summarize his position as quickly as possible.

The boy seemed to be in a hurry and slid down the debris to get to street level, and it was at this point Ika realized he probably needed to get down there. Ika used Shunpo but was stopped briefly by the same thing that had presumably forced the boy to stop in his tracks, the Committee HQ was destroyed. Reduced to a smoldering pile of ash and death. The only thing that could be seen throughout the rubble and ash were the occasional limbs of the injured who were still inside when the building was destroyed. When Ika looked to his left he saw ten Committee soldiers had been hung from a phone-line, and the visual gave him a tinge of guilt. Perhaps he should've arrived sooner, perhaps he should've taken this whole ordeal a bit more seriously..

The boy was conflicted about something, but Ika wasn't exactly sure as to what as he himself began to work his own way down the rubble path and onto the street below. As Ika approached once more he could hear the howling of excited movements across the city by the Sinners whom had invaded. The constant stream of screams he had heard earlier were snuffed out, replaced by screams that only rang out sporadically when they found a unfortunate soul whom had not yet passed on. In truth, Ika hadn't been around much for what one might call "raping and pillaging" a place or group, but he figured this was probably as close to that as one could possibly get.

Where exactly did it all go wrong here?.. The Committee was founded with good intentions as far as Ika was aware, it was half the reason he had quit concerning himself with protecting the Human World. Why on earth would the Espada, and then the Sinners attack all at once in equal measure?.. It was at this point that Ika heard sirens and began Shunpoing around to try and follow the Human from a distance, it seemed that he was pretty torn up about the whole ordeal and as such Ika wanted to let this sink in for a moment. The sirens were false, they were luring whoever was dumb enough to come to their deaths. They didn't provide comfort in these trying times, but instead they inspired fear and deep regret. They drove home just how far gone this city truly was.

Finally, as the boy was pondering what all had went on and what all went wrong he would see Ika appearing at his side, and cupping a hand over his mouth. Ika pointed down at the city below, where he would find a group of 30-50 Sinners scurrying across the rubble where he had once been trapped, executing any and all survivors they had found. In truth, some of the bodies they were mutilating didn't even appear as though they were truly alive, it looked more as though they enjoyed the macabre display they were putting forth. Ika motioned for the boy to follow and Shunpo'd to a rooftop about 200 yards away, hoping that the boy would follow him to it.

Once the boy arrived, if the boy arrived, they would begin to plan their escape from this incomprehensible hell-hole that the boy no doubt once called a home. It seemed that the dust and destruction spread for miles and miles at this point, as Ika really didn't see a true end to it but he figured the best course of action would be to head east, out of the city, away from these god awful Sinners, and hopefully to a place where he could comfortably summon a way home for them. The hope, was that they could enter a Senkaimon or Gargantua, and get the fuck out of dodge.

Elliott sensed another appear next to him, as if from nowhere. He didn't let his expression change too much, other than his contemplative frown deepening. He followed Ika's gaze to see the Sinners congregating down below. Almost aimlessly, they did their best to gather and slaughter whatever poor people they could find. It was a tragedy and truly a solemn event, but the only thing Elliott could feel right now was rage bubbling up within him. Despite that, using his strength of will, he forced himself to remain apathetic. He followed the stranger as he started to move. Amid gutted buildings and wrecked infrastructure there wasn't much of a city left here. It seemed they'd found a place where there were no Sinners--for now at least--and so they hung around.

"Picked a good fuckin' time to show up, Soul Reaper." He said, eying the newcomer as they stopped. There was an obscene serenity to this place, but Elliott couldn't allow himself to lower his guard. He stood in front of this stranger now, the only rational person left in this apparently hellhole, and he knew that he had nothing to bargain here, should it come to that.

Elliott never considered himself a good sensor of reiryoku but even he could recognize the monster standing before him.

As the two of them finally found a place to rest Ika took a deep breath and looked towards his new partner. He seemed to be happy with Ika's timing as he eyeballed him, and there was a certain serenity to where they had decided to take a pause. The boy didn't let his guard down and Ika frankly couldn't blame him at this point. One misstep was going to result in a fight that Ika was almost sure the boy couldn't survive, and he wasn't exactly thrilled with the idea of trying to crawl through the mania that was this city either. Ika saw Sinners patrolling the rooftops from across and pointed them out, descending into the building below while more or less dragging Elliot down the stairs with him. He kept a hand over the boys mouth until he checked the corners of the building, to make sure where they were was clear.

They were situated in an apartment complex and Ika quickly backpedaled into a nearby room and shut the door before removing his hand from the boys mouth. "Were you with the Committee, and are any of them left?" As Ika said this, he attempted to sit down on the bed behind him but felt something squish beneath him, and red blood seeped from under him. As he pulled off the blankets it appeared that someone had been gutted, and someone had just done their best to hide the body. He sat up, mildly perplexed by the violence in this city. Ika was listening to the boy but also doing his damnedest to figure out the state of things. He lightly opened the blinds and peaked outside. He saw the mad-man he confronted earlier orchestrating an execution, hanging Several Committee members by the neck before gutting them with what appeared to be a piece of glass. As their limp bodies bled and hung from the ceiling, Ika saw Denver look in the direction of the building they were situated in. He quickly shut the blinds and grimaced. "We're not going to be able to stay here for long.."

Elliott didn't appreciate the hand over his mouth, but he didn't make any fuss as he was essentially dragged into a building. The man who he assumed had decided to assume guardianship over him shut cased the room and closed the door, making sure that at least for now the room was free of any unwanted guests. They shuffled into a back room, where there was gore and flesh strewn everywhere, but nothing alive besides the two of them. Even if the stench made Elliott's nostrils curl, he appreciated the small peace for now.

"I was with the Committee training as a new recruit." Elliott said. He ran a hand through his hair, sighing. "Those assholes left me inside the building while the others went out to fight. Anyone who can fight is probably okay, but there's no chance any of the office staff made it."

He saw Ika's grimace as he looked out the window. Elliott didn't want to know what was over there, but agreed with Ika when he determined that they should move again. For now, Elliott would follow Ika's lead. Being under his umbrella would be the safest course of action for now, even if Elliott didn't trust him completely.

It seemed that the boy hadn't appreciated the hand over his mouth but he certainly wasn't fussing over it so Ika wasn't going to begin to pretend he gave a fuck in this current situation. It seemed that the only solace either of them were going to find in this hell-hole was bound to be temporary, and they'd only be out of the woods once they had cleared this entire area by at least a hundred fucking miles. Ika listened intently as the boy spoke, still somewhat anxious about the situation at hand Ika continuously opened the blinds to peer outside. Ika noticed at that point that the closer Denver came to their building, the more the color began to fade from Ika's vision. He was beginning to see the world more and more in black and white and it seemed that the boy was probably experiencing a lot of the same things.

Ika nodded his head after the boy finished what he said, and motioned for him to follow down the side stairs as Denver and his Sinner friends began to walk inside the building. As they slowly pattered down the steps, you could hear Denver inside, rattling off at the mouth about nothing to whoever was listening. "Everything is gonna be just awful, when we're around.. and all the color's gonna rot off your sight when we're around.." As Ika listened in he heard the small murmurs of a woman begging for her life, before she was silenced by a loud bang. From the sound of it, they had blown her brains out. It was a more peaceful death than most had been given, and as they reached the bottom of the stairs Ika waited a moment before heading out to the streets. Or at least, that was the original plan.

Ika first noticed fresh blood on Elliot's face, then gray matter on his own, then blood. As he looked up, he found the woman's dead body hung above them, and the positioning was precise enough to the point that it was clear that they knew where they were. Ika's mind was racing in ways it hadn't for quite some time, his pulse quickened as he heard the cackling of Sinners from all directions, he had to snap out of it and in a moment he grabbed the boy with one arm, tossing him roughly over his shoulder and he began to Shunpo off, as far from this place as he could get he just Shunpo'd Northwards but the screams never seemed to cease. The Sinners always appeared to be as close as they were in the moments prior to, he never seemed as though he were able to lose them and he couldn't understand why.. He needed to find a place to rest and inventory the situation. "Kid, look for a place to stop and take inventory for a minute."

A drop of blood fell in front of Elliott's face. New blood. Grey matter. Other gore. New gore. He looked up and saw someone who definitely wasn't there before. The woman from downstairs. He thought it must have been her. He heard her screams and now here she was. Before he could even process this sight and come to any kind of rational solution, Ika manhandled him and sped away. It was incomprehensible speed, and Elliott had to take a moment to recover as Ika stopped.

Take inventory, Ika told him. Well, he could do that. If this were a different time or place Elliott would express his annoyance at being called "kid"--he was twenty-one dammit! His eyes scanned over the remains of what once was Queens and he found a strip mall. It appeared open and also had many exits, so it was ideal if they needed to make a run for it. It was also relatively intact still, and there didn't seem to be any Sinners in the area. He pointed at it. "Let's go there."

Ika Mazi

Ika Mazi
Ika had paused long enough to hear the man speak of the strip mall, his mind was still a flurry of thoughts racing at a billion miles per hour each. He dashed towards it, it looked populated, but he could see scurrying about every corner. Soon, as though an act of benevolence had befallen this American staple, a horde of darkness descended upon the mall. The muddled screams and pleadings of the shoppers could be heard from miles away, and the Sinners appeared to Humans much as locusts do to crops. Ika put on the breaks immediately as a mound of Sinners descended upon his direction as well. He began running once more, still holding onto the boy for all it was worth.

He threw in a hard right turn and dashed in that direction, realizing full well to stop now was suicide. There would be no reprieve, no stop to the obnoxious quantities of Sinners descending upon them. One lurched downwards, trying to catch Ika off guard but was met with a very firm pele kick to the jaw at Shunpo speeds, before Ika landed once more to keep running. As they left the city, it appeared that a perimeter of some sorts had been established. They appeared unwilling to cross into Chicago, and it was known to be harboring a fairly powerful group of rogue humans. Perhaps that was where Ika needed to head, perhaps the boy was going to live after-all. Perhaps there was still some resistance left to the current menace at hand.

Elliott gasped as they arrived, the air finally returning from his lungs. His brain was swimming, his thoughts rattled. The smell of smoke and gore, once so present in his nose, was gone, replaced by the familiar scent of urban life. Elliott allowed his breathing to slow as things slowly began to make sense again.

"I thought they got all of New York." He said, looking around. He knew the Big Apple by heart, but he didn't recognize the names of the street signs around him or the buildings or anything. "Where are we?"

Ika Mazi

Ika Mazi
So Elliot had been fucked up by this little trip, his lungs were struggling to keep up with his bodies demand for oxygen and his brain wasn't doing much better. He was clearly rattled, and was currently adjusting to the change in scenery. As they arrived in the city, Ika tried to set him down and let him get his bearings. "We're in Chicago now.. Sorry, I may have went a bit faster than I should have." Ika frowned a bit, genuinely apologetic about the situation before continuing on.

"But yeah, now that we can talk; my name is Ika Mazi and I run a faction called Konton. I'm looking for talented individuals to join me in my pursuit of creating a better world, and in the short-term getting New York off of it's ass. If that sounds like something you'd be interested in, or if you at least want to give it a go.. You should join me in Bogota." Ika stuck his hand out and waited for the boy to shake it, hoping that he may have recruited yet another promising prospect for his organization.
